How To Keep Employee Morale Up

Posted on: 6 May 2019

Are you trying to keep your employees happy and working hard? Here are some of the things you can do to boost their morale.

Tell Them "Good Job"

Sometimes the simplest forms of motivation do the most. Employees often get uneasy and have their morale drop when they don't know if they're doing what's expected or if their job is on the line.

Simply walking up to them and telling them good job can give them an immediate morale boost and allow them to keep doing their job with confidence. For an even bigger boost, do it in front of everyone so that they can feel honored in front of their peers.

Provide Soft Perks

Sometimes, just making the workday a little more comfortable can make employees happier about spending time at work instead of wishing they were somewhere else. This can include things like free coffee or snacks, the occasional free lunch, or a pool table in the break room.

The idea is to give your employees something to enjoy during the day so they aren't just grinding out work.

Respect Their Personal Time

Employees have lives outside of work, and one of the worst things you can do is encroach on them. Don't ask employees to stay late or come in on the weekends except in the case of rare emergencies. And, it's not an emergency if you  planned ahead.

Give Them a Raise

Your employees are only working for you because you pay them. They may like you, but employment is a business transaction. If you try to pinch every penny and never reward your employees for their hard work, they'll never be happy working for you.

At a minimum, provide a two to three percent raise for inflation each year. Then add to that based on their job performance and contributions to the company.

Give Them a Trophy

People joke about millennials and their participation trophies, but the truth is they must like them since they keep asking for them. A trophy is more than just a piece of plastic. It's a public sign of recognition.

You can tell your employee they are doing a good job in front of everyone else when you hand them their trophy. Once your employee's trophy is on display on their desk, it will also give motivation to the other employees.
