Keep Your Gutters in Good Shape and Avoid Water in Your Foundation

Posted on: 30 October 2018

If you are worried about water getting into your foundation, there are a lot of things that you can do. One of the easiest things you can do is to work on your gutters. The gutters run across the bottom of the roof and collect all the water and debris that falls on your roof. There are several things you can do with your gutters to make that you don't get water in your foundation. So, what are some of those things?

Downspout

One of the things that you can do is to check out your downspout and extend it. The downspout runs from the gutter down to the ground. Most of the downspouts will end near the foundation of your house. What you can do to get that water away from your foundation is to use something to extend it out. There are downspout extensions that you can buy and hook onto your gutters. The water will go out further from your house. You can also get some kind of trough to place under the end of the downspout to help channel the water away from where the downspout lets out. It will act the same way as the downspout extension does, but there is the risk of water spilling out the sides.

Cleaning

Another thing that you can do to make sure that your gutters are in good shape is to clean them out. If you get rid of all the debris in the gutters that may keep the water from going through them the way that they should, you can eliminate the water overflowing your gutters. Ideally, you should clean your gutters out at least once a year. Some people choose to do that in the fall because then they are clearing out the leaves that have fallen into the gutter. However, you may want to consider cleaning out your gutters twice a year; once in the spring and once in the fall. This will give you the best results, and make sure that nothing is stuck in your gutters or maybe even growing in your gutters. If you aren't comfortable getting up on the ladder to clean out your gutters, you may want to consider having a gutter cleaning company come out to your house and do it for you.

If you are worried about water in your foundation, you want to start eliminating that risk by starting at the top of your house and making sure your gutters are in good shape.
